This year during a panel at MPTF’s second annual Healthcare Summit included a discussion about the recent recognition that we have “massive gaps” in the testing that is done on medications and treatments.  Dr. Jon LaPook moderated the panel that included Dr. C. Noel Bairey Merz, Dr. Joel Hyatt, and John Kahle who talked about issues that arise when a drug is only tested on a limited group of people, such as white men, the typical test group. Women, African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and Native Americans, etc., can all potentially have different reactions to what may be a “standard” dose or method of treatment.

That gap applies in our basic wellness, as well.  “Healthy” food choices differ from community to community as do the physical environments in which people live.  We make thousands of food and activity choices every day that add up to our overall health.  Watch as the panel talks about how we’ve got to get smarter about how we deal with the diversity issues that directly impact every individual’s well-being.
